Unpacking the Rainbow Spectrum: A Guide to Pride Flags (Part 2)

In Part 1 of this series, we explored the iconic Rainbow Flag, the Transgender Flag, and some lesser-known yet important flags representing specific communities within the LGBTQ+ spectrum. Let's continue the celebration of diversity and delve into even more Pride flags:

Progress Pride Flag

  • Colors: The Progress Pride Flag incorporates the traditional rainbow with a chevron of brown, black, light blue, light pink, and white. These colors represent marginalized LGBTQ+ communities of color as well as those living with AIDS and those we've lost.
  • Message: Inclusivity and intersectionality. It highlights how progress extends beyond sexuality to race, gender expression, and the fight against the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS.

Bisexual Pride Flag

  • Colors: Pink stripe (representing same-sex attraction), a blue stripe (representing opposite-sex attraction) and a blended purple stripe in the middle (representing attraction across the gender spectrum).
  • Message: Celebrating the beauty and validity of bisexuality, often an overlooked identity even within the LGBTQ+ community.

Pansexual Pride Flag

  • Colors: Pink (representing women), yellow (representing non-binary and genderfluid people), and blue (representing men).
  • Message: The capacity for attraction across all genders. Pansexuality and bisexuality sometimes overlap, but pansexuality specifically emphasizes attraction regardless of gender identity.

Asexual Pride Flag

  • Colors: Black (representing asexuality), grey (area between sexual and asexual), white (sexuality), and purple (community).
  • Message: Asexuality is a valid orientation! It acknowledges those who experience little to no sexual attraction while emphasizing their belonging within the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

Intersex Pride Flag

  • Colors: Yellow field with a purple circle.
  • Message: Symbolizes wholeness and completeness. Intersex people are born with variations in sex characteristics that exist outside typical male/female definitions. This flag celebrates their existence and bodily autonomy.
